Sometimes it is positive: "Really?! That sounds like fun; I wish I could do that. I love clowns!" Or it could be worse: "Oh nice, you're kidding -- right? Clowns scare me.� To most people, a clown is someone in a one-piece jumpsuit with pompoms up the front and a rainbow wig, swinging a whoopee cushion or rubber chicken, or squirting a flower. (If you own or wear any of these items please don't take offense -- this is just a sweeping generalization based on a popular notion!) But there is so much more to us than that, right? You know it! Those of us drawn to clowning are anything but a cartoon. We have deep feelings, desires, and dedication to bringing laughter to young and old. So what DOES it mean to be a clown? Even in the clown community it means different things to different people. Honestly, we need to be brave enough to take the time to identify ourselves. What kind of clown do you want to be?? There are so many options! When I do my PEP Talks (Personal Education Plan) for Mooseburger Camp, it is the first question I ask. What kind of clowning do you do? It is a great opening question and I love to hear the varied answers. For all the differences in clowns, there are still wonderful similarities. We love to make people -- of all ages -- smile, forget their troubles, and laugh. How do we choose to do it�ah, that is the difference. That is the wonder of clowning. So much variety! First you need to really embrace and define what kind of clown YOU are and what you want to do. Do not let anyone dictate what you are supposed to be or do. �Really?� you ask. �Really!� I say. You have to have the courage to look inside and make those choices for yourself. I probably have told you the story of my miserable failure as a birthday party clown. I used to drag my giant circus props into people�s living rooms and try to do a show. Yikes! They still smelled like elephant! After leaving the circus, I thought that to be a real "home town" clown I needed to do birthday parties. Well�I tried it. And I really didn't feel comfortable. It didn't fit my personality or performance style. I might have quit clowning if I would have had to stick it out in the birthday party market. Well, I probably would have starved! Luckily for me, I stumbled on some different options of performing. It didn't take too long for me to figure out that I was more comfortable as a stage clown doing skits. I also love meet and greet. It is so fun to chit chat with the audience and get to know them. Get a smile, a chuckle, take a picture, and move on. That brings a smile to my face. I like to ask ridiculous questions, especially of little girls in pretty dresses and sparkly shoes. �Can I borrow your dress? It might be a little big, but I can pin it in.� I come up with a silly scenario of why I need her outfit and the shoes too. It always gets a laugh out of the parents as the child tries to explain to me why I can not borrow their clothes. It�s just little silly stuff. I love silly stuff. Are you feeling pressured to be some kind of clown you don't want to be? It happens to a lot of us by well-meaning clowns. I will never forget how I got booked for my first birthday party. I was standing in a friend�s kitchen, delivering a costume I made for him. He was on the phone booking a party and realized he was double-booked. He looked at me and said �What are you doing Saturday?� Before I knew it, I was frantically trying to put together a birthday party show. He assumed because I was a Ringling clown, had performed at Disneyland and toured doing stage shows that a birthday party would be a��piece of cake!� HAH! Not so! Beware the well-intentioned clown. They try to help new clowns figure out what they want to be �when they grow up!� LOL! But here�s the reality: only YOU can figure out what to do with your funny talent. It just takes a little time, effort, and honesty to discover what you really want to get out of clowning. Take the challenge! Ask yourself these questions: What is the best way you like to perform? Do you like being the star of the show, or are you better suited to be a supporting player? Do you like stage performances and skits? Do you like one-on-one performing like meeting and greeting? Do you like the closeness of birthday parties and kids shows? Would you rather be a moving target, like in a parade? (Parades are great practice opportunities because you can perfect a short routine doing the same bit over and over again as you move down the parade route to get a fresh audience each time) Once you figure out these questions, you can look into the tools of the trade and how you can use them to enhance your own performing style. If you prefer the hit-and-run approach like I do, then parades, short skits, face painting, or balloons can be great tools. If you are more into developing relationships, then doing birthday parties can give you the chance to spend more time with your audience. If you like to perform solo or in a small group on stage for an extended time and have a message then Library shows, Fire Safety/Stranger Danger presentations, or Gospel clowning may be areas you want to explore. Hospital and Caring clown takes special skill; you need to be able to do your performing and detach yourself from the reality of the situation at hand. It may seem easy at first, until you loose your first patient. You need to be trained to deal with the emotional impact of this kind of work. Regardless of what style of clown you want to be, or what kind of clowning you want to do, you need to choose for YOURSELF. If well-meaning club members try to push you in a direction with which you are not comfortable, then you need to be ready to stand your ground. Some folks just can�t understand why another clown wouldn�t love to do the same thing they love to do. Simple, it is just not YOUR style. Smile and say �Thanks, but no thanks. I would rather do ______________ instead.� Having a prepared response is the best defense. Don�t be afraid to repeat it! Sometimes folks think if they just keep asking you will give in. Usually by the third time you say �No thanks,� they get the picture. Always do it with a smile. Most folks mean well, so give them the benefit of the doubt. Realize that they are not trying to goad you or make you miserable � they simply don�t understand your discomfort. To paraphrase a fitting quote: �Never attribute to malice that which can be explained by ignorance.� You never know where they are coming from. One of my favorite quotes states �Be nicer than necessary -- Everyone is fighting some kind of battle.� How true. As clowns, we are there to help heal the world with laughter, one smile at a time. Just remember �To thine own self be true,� and you can�t miss! You know, those �KEEP THIS COUPON� kind for raffles. You can find colorful rolls of 2,000 ranging from $6 to $11, depending on where you look. Plenty of places sell these: Wal-Mart, Party City, Staples, Oriental Trading, Amazon.com, even Sears. If you do any of those giant parades, like Milwaukee�s �Great Circus Parade�, you might go through a roll in one day! However, an entire roll can be bulky to carry around for a small event, so have a strip of a hundred or so clipped to your belt, or make your own mini roll: Tape the first ticket around an empty paper towel tube, and wind it around tightly a few times until you have enough for that day�s event. Trim the tube to fit in your pocket or bag, and you�re ready to go! <div align="center"><img src="http://mooseburger.com/newsletter/ticketroll.jpg" alt="" width="293" height="293" border="0"></div> They are perfect to hand out for free shows or parades! You can act like a ticket taker: �Ticket please. �What?? You don�t have a ticket? Here, you had better take this one.� They might ask you what it is good for. Shrug your shoulders and say: �I don�t know, but it says KEEP THIS COUPON so it must be important!� Take it one step further: Attach a small hole-puncher to a lanyard hanging around your neck or on your belt. Now you are ready for when the kids come back to you with the ticket and want you to do something else. You could use this bit before your Birthday Party as an ice breaker. Give every child a ticket and then punch a hole in it. Just the sheer silliness of it is fun! The more serious you are about it the better! Go through your make-up kit and give it a good scrubbing! Get the goopy gunk cleaned out of the corners. Clean all of your brushes with saddle soap or brush cleaner. Wipe off the containers. How�s the condition of your mirror? Perhaps it is time to replace that, too. 2. Toss out any old stuff that has gotten contaminated or separated. Make a shopping list of the things you need to replace. 3. Time to down-size? Buy a smaller tackle box if things have gotten out of hand. You may have upgraded to a more natural color base for your Auguste clown character. Why are you still hauling around that Bingo Pink??? Now is not the time to be sentimental. Take out any of the old stuff you don�t use anymore. However, if there are usable items that you just can�t bear the thought of throwing away, use your old make-up box for that old stuff and make it the �Make-up Grave Yard.� You will be glad you did (you never know when you�ll need a back-up in case of emergencies). 4. Put your powder sock or puff in a new plastic container or zip lock bag. Come to think of it�throw away that icky powder sock and fill up a new sock with fresh baby powder. Keep your Q-Tips in a small zip-loc bag so they stay neat and can be easily packed in tight spaces. 5. Make a travel repair kit for times when you need to do touch ups. Hey -- those little pencil stubs are actually good for something! 6. Buy a new smaller tackle box if things have gotten out of hand. Use your old one for extra stuff you don�t want to throw away, the �Make-up Grave Yard.� You will be glad you did! Make a shopping list of the things you need to replace. 7. Make a list of the brands, color names, and codes of your favorite items. Those screen-printed words on the containers will wear off quicker than you realize and pretty soon you won�t remember if you wear Warm Tan Glow or Warm Honey for your base. Keep the list saved in your computer and print a copy to stay in your make-up kit (laminate it or put it in a Ziploc bag to keep it clean). 8. Schedule a cleaning day for your make-up kit at least twice a year. You will be amazed at the difference it makes in your clowning. You will be more calm and confident! Not only will you never again be caught unawares with a sudden shortage of a certain color, but you also have more inner peace because you have one more area of your clown closet organized. She got her start in clowning in the 1980s with Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey Circus and Disneyland. She went on to create the costume company Pricilla Mooseburger Originals. After coming back from the circus, she found that the world needed a fresh take on how to train clowns; a place where they could go for a week and move toward a new level of clowning. She wanted a place where a beginner would get a holistic start on clowning with all its parts, not just a nice makeup. With the world-class Ringling Clown College program defunct, she began a plan for Mooseburger Clown Arts Education in 1994. It was the first clown training program to teach every style of clowning based on choosing one specific area on which to focus. Mooseburger Camp as we currently hold it began in 1996 and keeps getting better every year! Tricia loves teaching Clown Arts and considers it a vocation, not simply a profession. There is nothing more exciting than watching students and customers discover new things in themselves! People in Minnesota throw on a flannel shirt. 35 degrees: New York landlords finally turn up the heat. People in Minnesota have the last cookout before it gets cold. 20 degrees: People in Miami go into comas. Minnesotans close their windows. 0 degrees: Californians fly away to Mexico. People in Minnesota get out their winter coats. 10 below zero: Hollywood disintegrates. The Girl Scouts in Minnesota are selling cookies door to door. 20 below zero: Washington DC runs out of hot air. (Ya think? Nah.). Happy New Year to all my dear clown friends! No � really -- I mean it! I am so excited about this upcoming year and all the wonderful new adventures that will come my way. How can I be so positive? Good question. If you listen to the media, we should all go jump off a bridge. Eep! Clowns are creepy� Economy is in the tank� Corporations are cutting back� blah blah blah� In the clown industry, I have seen many changes. Change is inevitable. I hear there are less people joining the big organizations, less people going to conventions, less young people clowning, and lots of people who should be in the know predicting gloom and doom for the future of clowns. Hmmm. What do I think? Baloney! Each year I am blessed with meeting some of the most wonderful clowns on the planet! I meet folks who have been clowning for decades, and folks who are just getting started. It is true that the face of clowning is changing, but that is okay. Change can be GOOD if we choose to embrace it. Are there really not as many people going into clowning? Maybe. How can anyone quantify that? By the attendance at a convention? By the number of clown-for-hire websites? Maybe the types of clowning that are growing are the types that are hard to keep tallies of, simply because they aren�t the sort to put up their own websites or attend conventions. Maybe the people who are going into clowning now are going into it for the right reasons. It is not so easy to make a quick buck doing kids parties anymore. To make it in clowning you need to be clever and diversify. Hmmm�could that mean we get people who are more determined, more dedicated, more willing to go the extra mile? I think so. Maybe quality is better than quantity. There are more and more people going into clowning to give back to the community. More clowns are choosing to go to nursing homes and hospitals. That is not an easy road, but it is worthwhile! God Bless them! There are more opportunities to share your love of clowning by performing at cancer walks, Special Olympics, charity events, Make a Wish, soup kitchens, etc, etc. Pick you favorite cause and you will be very busy! I have watched it go both ways. I have seen people get into clowning for charity work, only to find that they can do some jobs for pay on the side to support their not-for-profit clowning habit. I have seen clowns-for-hire do so well, that they are able to give back by doing some charity work as well. Which every way works, it works! I don't worry about the age of our clowns. I still see young people entering clowning. I get contacted on a regular basis with requests for children and teens to be allowed to come to Moose Camp. I know of clowns who are running successful Junior Joey programs in their communities. People may not be going to conventions as much as year's past, but that is not the only place people gather to clown! Now they are communicating on the internet. <a href="http://www.clown-forum.com">Clown Forum</a> is a great place to meet clowns, ask questions, and get connected. The <a href="http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mooseburger/">Mooseburger Yahoo Group</a> is a fun way for alumni and new campers to get connected and stay in touch. Clowning may be changing, but change can be good. I am happy to be a part of it all. We have a lot to be happy about! This year Pricilla Mooseburger Originals will be launching a NEW website. My goal is to offer a more user-friendly shopping cart. We will also be taking advantage of YouTube and product demonstrations so you can find out more about our products before you buy. I am so excited about the Creative Clown Coaching program. New groups are forming and starting this month! Joy is all about attitude. It is just that simple. I have been able to refocus my energies and make meaningful changes over the past year. How? Small steps. I ask myself on a daily basis: �What can I do today to get me one step closer to my goals?� -- Oh wait a minute, first I need to set my goals. It is so crucial to know WHERE you are going if you are ever going to get there!! Take a minute before this New Year gets away from you and decide three things that you want to have happen in your clown world for 2012. Write them down. Post them somewhere you will see them everyday. Trust me. If you look at that list every day you will begin to change your thinking. You will be reminded of what is important to you. You will start to make small choices that will move you in the right direction. Here is one of my favorite quotes from <a href="http://www.tut.com/" target="_blank">www.tut.com</a> �I still don�t get why people are so surprised that the Tortoise beat the Hare over the long run. Consistent effort -- no matter how small -- sparks magic, fills sails, butters bread, turns tides, instills faith, summons friends, improves health, burns calories, creates abundance, yields clarity, builds courage, spins planets, and rewrites destinies. No matter how small.� I love that quote so much I printed it out and taped it to my desk right below my keyboard. You know what makes goal-setting easier? Surround yourself with positive people. Don't be afraid to tell people that you are going to try to be more positive this year. If you find yourself around clowns who go down the gloom and doom path, gently change the subject. Eventually they will get the hint that you are not interested in talking about negative stuff. That might be a glove puppet or a clown glove, because Christopher�s had a hand in both for over 40 years. And he�s equally at home backstage as a builder, writer, or tech, or in front of the stage as a director, or off stage as an instructor, trainer, or goofball. Christopher attended Ringling�s famed Clown College (Class of �82, with Tricia) and traveled with the Circus for 9 years working on all 3 units, 4 of those as Boss Clown on 2 units. He continues to do Special Events, Promotions, and PR for the Big Show, and is enjoying his 30+ year association with them. After traveling with the Circus, Christopher cofounded Applause Unlimited, an entertainment company serving the greater Mid-Atlantic area, specializing in professional puppet shows, stilt walking, and clowning. Christopher is also the stilt trainer and a talent coach for Six Flags� King�s Dominion�s Halloween Haunt. He has been a featured instructor at Ringling�s Clown College, Advance Studies in Clowning, numerous Puppetry Festivals and Clown Conventions across the country, and most importantly, here at Mooseburger Clown Arts Camp, teaching workshops on many aspects of both clown and puppet arts.
