Why Does Clowning Matter?

An interesting question was posed to me the other day by a non-clown type person who came into my costume shop. She found out I was the “Town Clown”. I gave her the quick synopsis of my career with Ringling Bros. as a circus clown, costume business, and Mooseburger Camp. She looked at me like I had just stepped out of a space ship and said, “What’s the point? I mean, what do you get out it?”  It was a sincere question, not meant to hurt or slight me in anyway. She genuinely just didn’t get it. I have been asked lots of questions in many interviews over the years, but this was the most straight forward and to the point. She went on to tell me that she had dated a guy who was a clown. She didn’t know it when they had started dating, but found out later. She was so surprised to learn he was a clown because she said he seemed so “normal!”  I had to laugh at that.

When she first asked the question I thought for a split second on how to respond. She obviously wasn’t into clowns. I was only going to get one chance to make a good impression. The first thing I thought of was the smiles. All the smiles I have seen on faces over the years. It started with my first parade. People were so excited to see a clown, even a not-so-good looking clown! It was such a rush, I simply knew I would do it the rest of my life. Then I thought about my students. The folks who come to camp to learn how to be the best clowns they can be. I thought of the smiles on their faces after they have performed in the All Star Clown Show at Moose Camp. They actually glow from the inside out! I thought of the smiles I have seen on the faces of people who come to the show. It makes me feel so good to be in this position to see those smiles. Can you hear a smile? Most of my performances are done on a stage, where I can’t see my audience due to the lights in my eyes. But I can hear their smiles!

Back to her question, “What do I get out of it?” In short: an unbelievable sense of peace, satisfaction and well being. When someone is laughing or honestly smiling, there is no way they can think about their troubles. That is the true magic of clowning. Think of the times in your life you would give your right arm to take the hurt away from a loved one. You would do anything to stop them from feeling blue or stop crying. But you are simply powerless. If you have kids you know what I mean.

A clown has the power to change things in an instant. You can not look at a clown and keep your mind on your troubles. Your focus changes, you move outside of yourself. “Look at that!” That colorful hair, that silly face, those wonderful clothes, that nose, those shoes! What in the world???? Like magic, you have transported someone away from their current mindset of troubles, worries, and responsibilities. People get to forget their troubles and we get to play. Powerful, isn’t it?

For children you open a door to a new world of imagination and play. It is a green light to have fun with a new playmate. Clowning is a license to play. That is our purpose. But not just to play, but also to think and feel in a different way, on a deeper level. Even if it is only for a brief moment the smile we bring to peoples faces is worth it. It changes everything, for everyone. And that’s the point – that’s why clowning matters.
